England & Wales sources and caveats: Data from PlanIt (planit.org.uk), covering England and Wales planning authorities, for applications decided in the three years to 12 August 2026 or still undecided as of that date. Locations are approximate site/town coordinates, not official boundary centroids. Two locations are recorded as declined: Buckinghamshire UA (ref. PL/24/0754/OA) and Three Rivers (ref. 23/1068/OUT). The two Cardiff entries have been checked against public reporting; the remainder have not been individually re-verified against each council's own planning portal — treat this as a snapshot for orientation, not a fully audited dataset. Generated 12 August 2026; "in progress" figures in particular will go stale over time. Two press-reported sites without a confirmed PlanIt record have been added as "Reported, unconfirmed": Havering — North Ockenden/Upminster (Digital Reef's proposed "London Data Freeport"; a direct PlanIt check found no record, though this may reflect indexing rather than absence) and Gwynedd — Trawsfynydd (named as part of the North Wales AI Growth Zone with no application identified yet). Epping Forest has been corrected from 2 in-progress to 1 approved/1 in-progress following direct confirmation that EPF/1165/22 (Loughton, Nscale) is approved. A further reported Northumberland claim (Cambois/Blyth) was checked directly and found to match the existing record, so no change was made there. One additional reported site — a second Harworth Group hyperscale site, location and council undisclosed — could not be mapped and is not included.
Scotland sources and caveats — read before relying on this: Scotland is built differently to the England & Wales data above, and is less reliable. There is no single official register of data centre proposals for Scotland (the Scottish Parliament's own research service, SPICe, confirms this), and PlanIt/planit.org.uk does not reliably index Scotland's current wave of AI/hyperscale proposals — a direct query returned only 2 genuine Scottish results nationwide. This dataset was instead compiled by web search council-by-council, cross-checked against The Scotsman's investigation and Action to Protect Rural Scotland's (APRS) tracker, both of which flag themselves as possibly incomplete. Each entry carries a HIGH/MEDIUM/LOW confidence rating from that research (shown after the site name below); LOW-confidence entries appear in only one secondary source with no independent corroboration and may be early-stage, imprecise, or duplicated under a different name elsewhere on this list. Coordinates for Scottish sites are this site's own approximate placement of the named town/village (not supplied by the source research) and are lower-confidence than the England & Wales coordinates for well-known place names; the location given for Haspielaw (South Lanarkshire) in particular is a county-level approximation, not a placed site. One further Scottish entry, a small institutional data centre inside a University of Glasgow campus redevelopment (Glasgow City), has been excluded from the map and table below because the source research explicitly flags it as a different category to the AI/hyperscale proposals everything else on this page covers.
